PATIO DEL RIO
Typology: Intervention
Location: Mexico City
Date: 2021

Patio del Río is a project that transforms the materiality and functionality of an existing terrace in Mexico City. This intervention not only altered the terrace's aesthetic character but also addressed a critical issue related to water management. The design reimagines the terrace as an integrated system that harmonizes form and function, creating a space that is both visually appealing and environmentally responsive.

DESCRIPTION︎︎︎

The proposal introduces a series of precast concrete pieces strategically designed to guide and channel rainwater, effectively preventing interior flooding. These elements seamlessly blend into the terrace's design, offering a practical solution while enhancing its architectural identity. To emphasize the path of water flow, marble inserts were incorporated, adding a refined touch that contrasts with the raw texture of the concrete. These marble accents act as visual markers, drawing attention to the movement of water and celebrating its presence as a design feature.

Beyond its functional role, Patio del Río redefines the relationship between built spaces and natural elements, integrating water management into the language of design. The result is a terrace that is not only resilient to environmental challenges but also offers an elevated spatial experience—where the interplay of materials, textures, and natural forces creates a dynamic and contemplative environment.

This thoughtful intervention demonstrates how small-scale architectural modifications can have a significant impact, turning a practical necessity into an opportunity for creative expression. Patio del Río exemplifies how thoughtful design can seamlessly integrate aesthetics and practicality, transforming a functional challenge into an opportunity to create a refined environment.
