CARPET OVER CARPET
Typology: Intervention
Location: Mexico City
Date: 2023
Carpet over Carpet is an architectural intervention project that demonstrates how
simple actions can generate multiple meanings and transform a space. This
approach seeks to reveal the latent potential in existing elements, giving them
a new purpose through careful and thoughtful modifications.
DESCRIPTION︎︎︎
On the interior, the project focuses on remodeling the existing floors by removing superficial layers to uncover and rescue a previously hidden marble floor. This process not only enhances the historical and aesthetic value of the material but also establishes a connection between the past and present of the space, highlighting the richness that lies beneath the surfaces.
On the exterior, the intervention addresses a fountain whose unfavorable proportions had affected the functionality of the courtyard. By removing it, a new design opportunity is created in its footprint, where a completely renovated floor is proposed. This new floor not only redefines the use of the courtyard but also expands its potential to host various activities, transforming it into a more versatile and dynamic space.
One of the most important aspects of Carpet over Carpet is its ability to play with reflections and shadows, using simple elements that interact with light and the surrounding environment. These visual qualities not only alter the space but also invite a constant reinterpretation of the intervened areas, offering different experiences depending on the time of day or the observer’s perspective.
The intervention underscores the idea that with a few precise gestures, multiple results can be achieved, creating a significant impact without drastically altering the original context.
Carpet over Carpet becomes a metaphor for transformation: just as a tapestry adds texture and meaning to a space, each intervention becomes a layer that enriches the architectural narrative of the place.
