AVENIDA DEL CONVENTO
Typology: Apartment Renovation
Location: Coyoacan, Mexico City

Avenida del Convento is a renovation project that transforms a 45 m² apartment through
a simple intervention focused on enhancing the atmosphere and quality of life
within the space. Inspired by the historical and cultural context of the
Ex-Convento de Churubusco in Coyoacan, the design establishes a dialogue between the
apartment's interior and its surrounding environment, incorporating materials
and tones that evoke the warmth and authenticity of the site.

The most significant transformation was the addition of clay flooring, whose natural texture and earthy tones create a strong connection to the area's architectural past. This material not only anchors the apartment to its context but also produces a luminous effect: light reflecting off the floor bathes the walls in warm hues, creating an inviting atmosphere.
Complementing this, wooden furniture with simple, functional designs was introduced, aligning with the aesthetic of the space. These pieces not only add warmth but also maximize functionality, reinforcing the idea that noble materials and thoughtful details can transform even the most compact interiors.
The renovation highlights that complex interventions are not always necessary to improve domestic quality. The project demonstrates how deliberate choices in materials and spatial perception can redefine the living experience, fostering an environment that is functional, aesthetic, and deeply rooted in its context.
Avenida del Convento also explores the relationship between architecture and collective memory. By using traditional materials like clay and wood, the design pays homage to local construction techniques while adapting them to a contemporary setting, bridging the history of the place with the modern needs of its inhabitants. This respectful approach to both the environment and the past serves as a model for how architecture can connect cultural identity with modern living.
In essence, the project transforms not only the physical space of the apartment but also its inhabitants’ perception of what it means to live in an environment intimately tied to its historical and cultural context.
